Laura Pitt “Attitude of office staff – ‘unhelpful'”

Date: 20 September 2018

Throughout my time at Bath Spa University I rented one four bed property for two consecutive years with Roman City. Our first dealing with them was just after Christmas in our first year. We eventually found a property that was not moldy/damp and did not have rats! When signing the tenancy agreement we had to hand over a large sum of money as a deposit. Roman City only specified this must be in the form of a cheque once we were sat in the office (only one housemate had a cheque book, so had to write out 16 post-dated cheques for the four of us!)Throughout the two years with Roman City checks on the house were carried out. The staff treated us like children even though they had nothing bad to report about the condition of the house. I found this unreasonable as we were responsible tenants. Our final ‘issue’ with Roman City was receiving our deposits back at the end of our two years. This process took a while and only when proof that ALL bills had been paid. If specific instructions had been given that this was what was expected of us, we would have sorted this before leaving the house; however, they didn’t seem too worried about holding onto our money until we questioned it! It took many phone calls and visits to the office before this situation was resolved. After all the ‘run-ins’ with the Roman City staff, our landlord was brilliant and working directly through him would have been much easier.

Laura “very good!”

Having rented through Roman City and through private landlords, i think renting through the agency was better as they helped us communicate with our landlord.
