Students at the university have a number of great transport facilities allowing for ease of transportation around the campus.  There is a free bus service that runs to all buildings/facilities across the university’s campus.  Furthermore, if you require a bus service around Sunderland there is a local service and this also travels to locations just outside of the city centre.  There is a metro service in Sunderland. However, typically students do not tend to use it due to its running time, as it tends to be quicker to walk to other areas than wait for the metro and also saves the pennies!!

For connections to other areas across the UK, Sunderland train station has a number of services everyday that run to popular cities.  Furthermore, with Newcastle-Upon-Tyne only about 30 minutes car journey away from the centre of Sunderland there is always the option to use their excellent transport services and the close location of the Newcastle Airport.

Parking and Permit Information:

There are a number of streets, which require a permit.   A permit will allow street parking and if this is not possible you have the option to park in a number of car parks across Sunderland without any extra cost. Due to this benefit, permits are very expensive and currently per quarter a permit is £255.00. Therefore as a student it would be advisable not to bring a car as per annum a permit is £545.00. However, this is for street permit parking so make sure you check the street you find a property on before requesting the property to rent.

Living in Sunderland:

Nightlife in this North East City is exhilarating and has a number of popular social venues that have built up great reputations with students.  The most popular nightclubs for students are Liquid, Passion and Pure.  There are of course a number of other nightclubs located in Sunderland and they provide great student offers throughout the week.  Other popular social venues include the two bars called Chase and Luma, which are both modern and charming venues to be in.

The nightlife in Newcastle is favourable for students due to the endless locations in the city centre and the excellent variety it offers.  Popular areas include the Quayside, City Centre and Osborne Road in Jesmond.  There are huge amounts of clubs in Newcastle.  Digital is a perfect club for party animals as it has a host of top DJ’s who play at a number of events throughout the year – for example Turbulence is a popular drum and bass night.  Alongside this there are also some prime areas in Newcastle for you to go enjoy a selection of bars and restaurants such as The Gate and for those that enjoy live music performance it would be recommended that you  visit The Sage Gateshead.  There are also a host of comedy clubs across the city including the Hyena Comedy Club and Jongleurs.

The main focal point in Sunderland is the Bridges Shopping centre but together with this, in the Victorian streets of Sunderland there are beautiful boutiques offering unique and interesting items.  The shopping centre is more central to the location of the high street stores.  With Newcastle-Upon-Tyne only 30 minutes away you can also enjoy the delights of that northern city.

There is a range of shopping areas located in and around Newcastle.  The main shopping centres are Edon Square and Gateshead’s Metro centre.  However, you can also find numerous shops and boutiques in Market Street, High Bridge, Hood Street and Jesmond, which are located outside of the city centre.  Obviously, if you would like to get involved with other activities and not just shopping there are many musicals, festivals and cultural sights to explore in the city.
